1) We start out with the theme All About Me..... A great science activity I use to start out with is the mystery bowl. I get a bowl that you cannot see through.Pour in water and cover it up with aluminum foil. Then poke a small hole in the foil. Tell the children that they are going to predict what's in the bowl by using their 5 senses.....First I have them smell the bowl.  I encourage them not to guess until they are all finished. Then they listen to the bowl. Then they put their finger into the bowl and then they taste their fingers.... (Wash hands first). When all is complete I have each child tell me what they think it is... It's amazing some of the answers I get..... Each week I change the mystery bowl.... One week it could be spagetti cooked... Grapes, Jello, cotton, what ever you can think of.... 2) This week we studied the five senses. We used plastic dish pans and put in them shaving cream in one pan, cold water with ice cubes in another, warm water, paint, jello, plastic packing bubbles. We put these next to each other in a row and had each child walk barefoot through them to experience the different consisitency of each one, the smells, temperature and looks . The children loved doing this and wanted to keep walking through the pans.Make sure you have plenty of towels to clean and dry off all the little feet. 3) When we do our unit on the five senses the children love to do the texture painting. Give each child a sheet of construction paper. Using a bottle of glue children make a design on their paper. Don't let them make puddles with the glue. Let dry over night. The next day children can feel the bumpy texture of their design. The children then finger paint their design with tempera paint. 4) We are doing a unit on all about me. OUr class is talking about the 5 senses. I have done a really fun sensory activity with the children. Take latex rubber gloves. Fill each one with dried peas, flour, sugar, oatmeal, cotton, and any other texture that you feel would be interesting . Tie them up and then at circle or small group time have the children guess what they think is in each hand... They loved it... It was so great to watch their faces and to hear what they thought each texture was..... Another fun thing is to fill the gloves with water and freeze. Then add them to your water table..... THe Pre-k's love it. 5) SENSESFLUBBERY BLUBBERY - THIS IS A SAFE FUN SUBSTANCE THAT IS A BLAST IT MUST BE KEPT IN AIRTIGHT CONTAINERS. ASK YOUR CHILD WHAT SENSE THEY USED TO MAKE FLUBBERY BLUBBERY. SOME PEOPLE CANNOT SEE. THEY ARE BLIND. THEY USE BRAILLE TO READ. LOOK FOR BRAILLE WHEN YOU GO TO THE STORE OR FAST FOOD RESTAURANT. SOME PEOPLE CANNOT HEAR. THEY ARE DEAF. THEY USE THEIR HANDS TO DO SIGN LANGUAGE. ASK YOUR CHILD TO SIGN FOR YOU.. THEY CAN.
