Have the children draw their face on the plate and their body on the construction paper, trying to duplicate themselves, ie: colour of eyes, hair and what they are wearing. They may add buttons and wool for hair. It is always fun to see how they draw themselves and the paper plates add dimension to their drawings. Mirror Anatomy (game) Children can practice naming the parts of their bodies while looking in a mirror. They will also enjoy practicing different facial expressions. Observing how they look when they have different feelings inside helps children to understand the Body Language of others. People Puzzles (game) Materials: Masking Tape Make a very large shape on the floor with masking tape. It's fun to make letters and numbers. One by one the children fit their bodies along the outline shape until the puzzle is complete. Let some children watch as the people puzzle comes to life. Kid Connections (game) Each child finds a partner. As you call out body parts, each child connects with his partner. 'Toe to toe! Elbow to elbow! Knee to knee!' Then try calling 'finger to shoulder' or 'lips to ear' or 'heel to back.' Experiment with connecting cheeks, thighs and knuckles. The children will watch and learn as they successfully bond in these 'kid connections.' They will discover more and more body parts and all the ways these different parts move, bend, twist, turn. Personal Puzzles Materials: photographs or self-portrait (done with crayons on paper), clear contact paper, scissors Take photographs of the children or use self-portraits they draw themselves. Cover each picture with clear contact paper and cut them into puzzle pieces. Let the children fit the pieces of their own and their friends picture back together in a very personal puzzle experience. Using childs own picture or self-portrait in a puzzle will add more meaning to the activity and give the child a better sense of self and body awareness. Mirror, Mirror (game) Standing face to face, the children imitate each others movements. Have them take turns being the reflections and the person looking into the mirror. They should move slowly and keep a closeeye on their mirror images while making identical whole-body movements and facial expressions. Fruit Plate (lunch or snack) Give each child a paper plate and sliced fruit. Ask them to create themselves using the slices of fruit. Example; grapes for eyes, sliced apple for eye brows, banana sliced lengthwise for a mouth and a kiwi slice for a nose. This presents an ideal time to disucss the importance of eating well to maintain healthy bodies. When their creation is finished they may eat the fruit plate for snack! Me Pizza (lunch or snack) Let the children create me pizzas using english muffins, pizza sauce, cheese, pepperoni, greenpepper slices. The children can use the pepperoni and green pepper slices to create faces on their pizzas. Bake in oven and serve. These are sure to be a big hit. Snack Time Placemat Materials: Picture of child, transparent adhesive paper Mark each child's place at snack time with a personalized placemat. Using a 9 X 12 inch sheet of construction paper glue the child's picture on it and print the child's name underneath the photograph in large letters. Cover it with transparent adhesive paper for protection. Instead of using a photograph have the child do a self portrait. Thumbprint Cookies 1 C butter, 1/2 C gran. sugar, 2 eggs separate, 1 tsp vanilla, 2 C flour, jam. Flaked coconut, finely chopped nuts or crushed cornflakes In a bowl cream together butter and sugar. Beat in egg yolks and vanilla. Blend in flour. Shape into small balls. Dip into unbeaten egg whites and roll in coconut, nuts or crushed cornflakes. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet. Make a depression in centre of each using thumb. Bake at 325 for 12 to 15 minutes or until just firm. Fill centre with jam. ENJOY That's My Name Materials: Paper, Pencil, Glue, Macaroni, buttons, popcorn, seeds. Print the child's name on a large piece of paper and have the child glue macaroni, buttons or popcorn over the letters. Body Outline Materials: Large craft paper, crayons or paint Place a large sheet of kraft paper on the floor and have the child lie on it. Trace the child's outline with a crayon or marker, then cut it out. The child can then add facial features, body parts and clothing using paint, crayons or fabric. Help the children identify body parts starting with the head. Point out differences when they are finished, the different sizes, (tall, short) colour eyes, hair etc. We are all different and all special! Hand Prints Materials: Paper, paint, brush Have your child paint the palms of their hands and make a print on a piece of paper. Make your own hand print next to each child's. Compare the prints. Discuss growing up and the changes that take place. Thumbprint Critters Materials: ink stamp pad, tempera paints or chocolate syrup, paper, markers or colored pencils or crayons Press your thumb or fingertip onto a piece of paper. This will leave your thumbprint on the paper. Make as many prints on the paper as you like. Let the prints dry. Draw faces, legs and other features on your critters with markers. Tiger (1 print body 1 print head, strips, legs, tail, and ears)- Turtles (1 print body, shell blocks, legs, tail, head) - Butterfly (4 print wings, body, head, attenas) - Lion (1 print body, 1 print head, legs, tail, main) - fish, rhinoceros, hippopotamus Copycats (game) Everyone copycats the actions and sound of the leader. The leader sings the rhyme below. Go first to give the children examples of the range of sounds and movements possible. Use any sounds motions should involve body parts moved in different ways. Repeat the same sounds and movements until everyone is able to imitate. Repeat the musical rhyme and begin again. This is a wonderful activity for even the introverted child. Copycat, Copycat That's what I am, Copycat, Copycat Do what__________ does, if you can You could do some graphing- take pictures of the children during different activities- say, for an "I can" graph... the categories could be 1) brushing hair 2) washing hands 3) throwing away trash 4) serving food (if you have family style meals) or whatever categories, then make big squares that pictures can fit in (that match) or enough 'picture size' squares for the children... this could be a small group or individual activity. Other graphs- girls and boys, indoor and outdoor, everyday (for routines like lunch, nap, coming to school, and leaving), etc.You could take pictures of the children building a block structure, or creating something with sand or other materials, during a painting activity or other art activity in the various stages of construction, and use that as a stepping stone to 'discussion'. (These pictures could be laminated or otherwise mounted into manilla folders- one for each different activity) A Handy Mobile In just a jiffy you can make a handy mobile. Trace around your hand, on four pieces of construction paper of different colours. Cut out four hand shapes. Tape a hand shape to each end of two straws. Tie a string to the middle of each straw and connect the straws. Tie another string to the middle of the top straw and hang your mobile where it can move around freely. Mirror Activites-One thing we did was to have the children look into the mirror and draw what they see. It is nice to see the self portraits. We also made a "mirror" to hang in the hall with the self portratis by using tin foil in the middle of two pieces of construction paper. It is safe and gave everyone the feel of what we were trying to convey. Look at pictures of children displaying different emotions with older toddlers. Talk about what the child in the pictures is feeling. I Know My Address! Encourage each child to memorize his or her address. Draw and cut out a large construction paper house to place on a bulletin board. Then, as the children memorize their addresses, invite each child to pin his or her name and address on the house shape. Invite the children to sing their addresses to the tune of "rain, rain, go away" for examples see "My Name and Address from Wee Sing Children's songs and fingerplays) Talking Feet- Have each child stand on a sheet of paper and trace around both feet. Cut them out and have each child color each foot to make a foot puppet and glue to popsicle stick. get the children to start the feet talking with "Where did your feet go today? What color are your shoes? How high can you jump?.." Encourage one foot to talk to other feet. Action Shadows-Shine a bright light on the wall. Let the children find their shadows and show that they do whatever they do-jump,dance, turn around,wave... Then you can make shadows with your hands... Body Match up- Beat a drum, or ring a bell...as you "You walk and you walk amd you walk and you stop!" after you stop you call out a body part .."Hands! then the children match their hands to those of another child. You can change the action run, hop, skip, crawl and body part, hand, foot, elbow, head.... Changing Body Game Get a picture of your child and glue it to a piece of paper. Then allow the childern to go thru magazines, newspapers, etc... and cut out pictures of animals, people, characters. Then cut off the heads of all of these pictures and they can place them over their picture to see what they would look like in someone else's body!.Example: cut the head off of Bozo the clown and place the rest over the body of your picture and you can see what it looks like! How about cutting off the head of a giraffe and having a body like a giraffe...it is a lot more fun than it is written. "Me" Book Have each of the children bring 4 or 5 snap shot sized pictures from home. Use Zip Lock baggies for the children to insert 2 pictures front to back. You can insert a cardboard between the pictures to make it more sturdy. Add 2 binders on the zipper end and the children can flip through their own book. Following Directions Arrange chairs in a circle and put a box of blocks in the center. Invite each child to select a block from the box and find a chair to sit on. Then give the children directions to follow, such as 'Put your block on top of your head; Put your block under your chair; Put your block beside your chair.'
