Point out that, despite similarities, everyone is special.  Now have students look for things that are special about each of them, such as hair, eye color, nose shape, family, address, and name.  Together count eyes, noses, feet, toes, and so on. Discuss different skills and abilities.  Make a chart of caring for personal needs: *I can go to the bathroom alone *I can put on my shoes *I can brush my teeth *I can put on my jacket Count how many children can accomplish each task, and record. Discuss likes and dislikes for kinds of food, activities, toys, places. Bring in a small suitcase filled with favorite things from home to share with class, such as a postcard of a trip, a china animal, a sweater.  Children then take turns taking suitcase home and bringing their favorite objects to share.   When we begin our school year we send home a piece of construction paper with"All about_________." THe children work at home with their parents creating a page all about themselves, it usually comes back with photos, cut pictures from magazines, box tops, labels, etc. We then laminate these pages and put a ring on it to create a class book. The children love, as do the parents, looking through the book. We keep it out all year and it is well used.   "All About Us Books."     1.  I asked each family to send in a picture of their child.     2.  Each child decorated a piece of construction paper in whatever manner   they wished....using bingo daubbers/markers/crayons/stamps & stamp pads/   stickers etc. etc. etc.  Then we placed a piece of double stick tape to   the back of their picture and they taped their picture anywhere they   wanted onto their decorated construction paper.      3.  I typed and ran off the following questions for each child to answer.      MY NAME IS____________________. (child wrote own name)     I HAVE __________SISTERS AND _________BROTHERS. (Child used number   stickers to fill in answer.)     I HAVE A PET _______________________. (Child chose an animal sticker that   depicted their pet or left this blank.)     I LIKE THE COLOR ______________. (Child chose a crayon sticker or used   markers to color the answer.)     I LIKE TO EAT ___________. (Answer was dictated by child and written by   teacher.)     AT HOME I LIKE TO ________. (Answer was dictated by child and written by   teacher.)     AT SCHOOL I LIKE TO_______. (Answer was dictated by child and written by   teacher.)     4.  I took the two finished pages from each child and bound them together   with the rest of the class's to make an "ALL ABOUT US BOOK!"     5.  We pulled a name each day from our LET'S TAKE TURNS BOX and that   person got to take the book home for one night to share with his/her   family.     This was very well received by children and parents alike.  As the   children "read" the book with their parents all sorts of stories unfolded   as their friends and classmates pictures and stories about themselves   appeared.  It was such a popular activity that I plan to do it with my 5   day as well as my 3 day class next fall.  Math Bring in various scales and balances.  Weigh items.  Children guess which items will weigh more.  Measure and weigh the children.  Graph from smallest to tallest and from lightest to heaviest. Children make an "All About Me" book by cutting pictures from magazines and pasting them on pages with the following headings: *Food I like *People I like *Toys I play with Have each child draw a self-portrait on the cover. Art Children ink fingers with a stamp pad, and make fingerprints on paper.  They can turn them into crazy critters with felt pens by drawing eyes, whiskers, legs. Examine how each child's fingerprint is special.
