Give a child a 9 inch paper plate. Have them cut out the shape of a leaf from green paper (you can draw out the leaf for them or let them be creatiave) and this will be added to the apple last. They can make the apple red by simply coloring the whole plate red, paining the whole plate red, sponge painting the plate red for a textured look, or (my favorite) by tearing up pieces of red construction paper and glueing them on the plate for a unique textured 3-D type of look. Don't forget to add the leaf. Cut the apple in half horizontally and let the children observe the "star" that holds the seeds. Count the seeds with the children and have them compare the number with their predictions. Try the experiment with another apple. Does it have the same number of seeds as the first? Try the same experiment using a different colored apple --As you cut open the different color apples make note that the insides are the same even though the outside is different. You can make the same comparison with people---different on the outside but all the same on the inside.) Extension: Set out apple seeds (with several of them cut in half) and let the children examine them with a magnifying glass. We also pick out one red, one yellow, one green and then we return to the center and discuss the difference in shape and color. When we open them we discover that even though they may seem different on the outside they are still the same on the inside. (Make sure that when you talk to them you also discuss taste, they may all look alike on the inside but they do taste different *********************************************************************** • Apple Tree Game Same idea as above using red caps for apples in an apple tree. It's a very thin, short paperback book. It's a MUST for applesauce day! Basically it is the story of Henny Penny...."Who will help me grind the corn, bake the bread etc." Only the story has been adapted. The chicken in this story is asking "Who will help me pick the apples, slice the apples, cook the apples etc." And the end reads "Who will help me EAT the APPPLESAUCE?" I read the story and then I go back and ask the children "did you help slice the apples, cook the apples etc." " Then YOU can eat the APPLESAUCE!" And We do!! *********************************************************************** •Crock pot applesauce 8-10 medicum apples, peeled and diced 1/2 cup water 1 cup sugar 1/2 tsp. cinnamon combine apples and water in the slow-cooking pot. Cover and cook on low for 4 hours until apples are very soft. Add sugar and cook on low for another 30 minutes. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Note: apples will be slightly chunky. If smooth is preferred, puree in a blender. *********************************************************************** • I let my 3 year old class peel, core and slice some of their apples after our trip to the apple orchard, with this gadget. They love doing it. She also has a wonderful clay stone 9 x 12 baking pan and we fill the bottom of the pan with apple slices - at least one apple peeled by each child - (I have 10 children) then sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar mixture or sugar and apple pie spice mixture to cover apples lightly. Then we use a jiffy or Martha White small package of yellow cake mix, and just sprinkle that over the apples, do not make a batter but use the dry cake mix - sprinkle some more spice and sugar on top cake mix and drizzle a melted stick of margarine over the top of cake, bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes - serve hot with ice cream is best - or let cool and have for snack in the afternoon. Delicious - Great fun for the kids. *********************************************************************** •What's Inside An Apple? Take two paper plates and have the child color the outsides red. Put the plates facing each other so the outside is showing, punch two holes in one side and tie together with yarn. Open "apple" up and glue apple seeds into the middle of the plate. Cut out stem and green leaf cutous and glue them to your peek-a-boo apple. *********************************************************************** •We made apples out of paper plates. The children color the backs of two paper plates red and add stems (brown or black) then staple one side together so one side can still open then we glued real apple seeds inside. They like to open and close them!! *********************************************************************** •Apple head grannies. Peel the apple leave the stem at the top. Tie a string to the stem. Hang in a dry area like a window in a couple of weeks the apples will shrink an wrinkle up like little old ladies. you can make a body by putting the heads on small bottles( shampoo, dish soap etc.) Make a dress out of a piece of fabric. you can even use a small paper clip to make glasses. Hint if you don't want the apples to be that brown then dip them in lemon juice first. *********************************************************************** •APPLE Needed: red strips of paper about 1 1/2 " wide green strip about 3" long and 1" wide brown strip about 2" long and 1" wide Take the red strip of paper and bend the ends together. Add paper leaves and hang or send home as is. *********************************************************************** •CINNAMON APPLE I don't know if this would work, but it is a thought I had. Cut an apple shape out of sand paper. Color the sand paper green or red with crayon. Then rub a cinnamon stick over the paper to make it "smelly". I know the smelly part will work, I am just not sure of how to get it to be a color. *********************************************************************** •APPLE CORE Draw an apple shape - a little more oval through the sides than up and down on green or red construction paper. Cut the apple in half through the sides, not the up and down. Cut out a white core. This is shaped like a long rectange with the ends flared out on each side. Glue this between the two apple pieces. Either draw on or sponge paint on black seeds in the middle of the core. These are really cute! *********************************************************************** • I just saw a real cute idea that a friends daycare Mom did with the 4 year old children. She used a piece of sand paper, the rough side, and drew an Apple(you could draw anything) with a black crayon. She colored in the apple, bearing down on the crayon, red and put a green leaf on top.Now you take white paper and flip the sandpaper onto it, apple side down.Iron with a warm iron and the print transfers to the white paper. It looks really neat. The children colored in the apple but Mom or teacher does the ironing. *********************************************************************** •Make three of the same size paper apples, colored by the children in red, yellow or green and then glued together to make a 3-D apple. we also added a paper worm with a smile sticking out *********************************************************************** •Apple pizza (very delicious and smelled great down my end of the hall - recipe follows:) Ingredients: Pizza dough, apples, flour, sugar, cinnamon, shredded cheddar cheese. 1.
