CEREAL LETTERS: This is a great activity both to teach and reinforce the letters of the alphabet. MATERIALS: black magic marker large construction paper glue, glue trays (butter lids) magazines, scissors fruit loops ( any small cereal) In large print, draw the chosen letter onto the construction paper with the marker. Have the children dip individual pieces of cereal into the glue and cover the entire letter with the pieces. Next, have the children look through magazines, finding various pictures that begin with the same letter. After cutting out several pictures, have the children glue the pictures around the letter. Display around the room, and replace them with your next letter of the day posters. MATH: MATERIALS: plastic cupcake holders (micowave) construction paper scissors black marker fifty-five cocoa puffs or like item Measure the bottom of one of the cupcake holders, then cut construction paper circles that will fit in each cup. In large print, number the cupcake holders, leaving the two in the center blank. Place the cereal into the center holders. To play this math game, ask the children to put one piece of cereal into the cup marked one, two in the two cup and so on. To make the game a little harder, mix up the numbers in the cups so they aren't in numerical order. For older or more advanced children, try writing math equations on the cup circles. ( 1+ 1 and so on). As long as you end up with an answer that is ten or below, you can really use your imagination and work on areas of math that need reinforcing. LISTENING/SPEAKING: CEREAL SONG: (TUNE: ABC SONG) Cereal, cereal, how I love you For breakfast, lunch or dinner too! Floating in milk or out of the box Some look like donuts, some look like rocks. I'd crunch you and munch you all day if I could But I guess for my tummy, that would'nt be goodd! CEREAL BULLETIN BOARD: MATERIALS: colored paper to cover the back ground of the bulletin board, cheerios or like product, watercolors (various colors) small paintbrushes, glue, glue trays (butter lids) small paper plates. Cover the bulletin board with colored paper. In the center of the bulletin board write, AS THE BRITISH SAY..CHEERIO! As we say here at (school name), HELLO! WELCOME TO OUR ROOM! Encourage the children to use a wide variety of colors. Let the ceral dry..it shouldn't take more than a half an hour. Next, glue some of the cheerios around the border of the bulletin board. Create your own design or pattern. The children are now ready to make their cheer!! (eee-oh) faces. Give each child a papper plate and access to a glue tray. Have each child glue the colored cereal to his paper plater, making a unique face of his very own. Encourage HAPPY FACES, but the faces will be more interesting if they are all different. When dry, hang the welcoming faces around the center message.
