College’s: Wax Paper: Materials needed: Iron wax paper Interesting bits of tissue paper, glitter, crayon shavings, confetti Procedure: Press between pieces of wax paper. Hang in windows. Pasting and Collage: Whipped tissue collage Materials: Any weight paper or background. Inexpensive white, or colored facial tissue tissue paper. White glue, paste, starch, food coloring Tools: Electric Blender Preparation: Drop 1 facial tissue into blender and cover. Turn blender on the high speed until tissue becomes fluffy. Colored tissue paper can be used to make confetti-like material. Procedure: Allow the child to experiment with this “fun” material. Suggest he place adhesive on the background paper and apply whipped tissue. Variation: Combine with string painting for a flower like picture. It can become a unique 3-dimensional pumpkin by using either orange facial tissue or white facial tissue and a drop of orange food coloring. *Tempra hardens this material* Boiled Paste: 1/2 cup of flour with cold water until it is as thick as cream. Boil gently for about 15 minutes. Stirring constantly. Uncooked paste: To a handful of flour or dry wheat paste add water, a little at a time until the mixture is creamy and thick. This is not as sticky as Boiled Paste, but it will hold scraps of paper together or allow the children just the pleasure of smearing it. Soap Flakes: Beaten soap flakes can be used to adhere lightweight things when keeping the collage is not important. Use 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 cup of soap flakes to 1 tablespoon of warm water and beat with an electric beater. Garden Collage: Materials: Soap flakes (Ivory Snow) green paint, brushes, bowl of water, mixer, paper plates, seeds, flowers, glue. Procedure: Mix flakes, green paint and water to form a thick mixture. Spread thinly on paper plate. Press on seeds, flowers and leaves, let dry. Coiled paper cutting: Cut along a coiled line on a thin paper plate. These can be arranged into interesting patterns on any background. Sprinkle Art: make a design or picture outline with glue or paste. Immediately sprinkle the glue with soap powder, sand, salt, sugar, colored sawdust, or colored rice. Scraps of colored paper or crayon or paint can be sued to complete the picture. Magazine Collage: Tear pictures of magazines. Apply to construction paper or other background. Torn paper picture: Tear some pieces of paper and paste or glue them together to make a picture. Beautiful Junk: Glue odds and ends you find around. Circle Collage: Pre-cut for younger children. Various size circles of paper and other materials. Flat Cork Collage: Pieces of flat cork glued to heavy paper or cardboard. Ribbon Collage: Different sizes, shapes, patterns and colors of ribbons. Glue or paste to any background. Foam Collage: Styrofoam of many shapes, colors and sizes, or one color, shape or size, glued or pasted on a heavy background. Pebble Picture: Small pebbles from the yard or fish tank gravel glued to paper. Nice texture. Button Collage: Buttons of various sizes, shapes, and colors glued or pasted to any background. Yarn on Sandpaper: This does not even need to be glued or pasted. The sand paper will grip the fibers. Toothpick Collage: Toothpicks can be glued to form shapes, or patterns or randomly placed. Cupcake Paper Collage: Pick one holiday or several. Large size or mini. Nice 3-D effect. Can be twisted, folded or left open. Geometric Shapes: Can be glued or pasted to any background.
