Did you ever hear a rainbow, a rainbow, a rainbow Did you ever hear a rainbow say ICKY OLD PEAS? Did you ever hear a rainbow a rainbow, a rainbow Did you ever hear a rainbow say ______ BROKE THE CHALK? (insert a child's name) Did you ever hear a rainbow, a rainbow, a rainbow No, I never heard a rainbow CAUSE RAINBOWS CAN"T TALK! Under The Rainbow (Up On The Housetop) First comes the rain cloud passing by Dropping raindrops in my eye Then comes the sunshine up so high Now a rainbow in the sky Yea-Yea-Yea who wouldn't go Under the rainbow, yes, siree, Under the rainbow you and me. Barney's Rainbow Simple and beautiful a rainbow So pretty for the eyes to see There's red, orange and yellow green, blue and purple And it's curved like this you see. Somebody told me that a rainbow has a pot of gold at the end I don't really know if that's so But it's kind of fun to pretend It was made for you and me. * another rainbow idea that I have used is to crush egg shells and glue them in the shape of a rainbow on thick construction paper.  Now paint the rows of the rainbow.  Wa-La!  You can also pre-dye the egg shells with easter egg colors and then glue them on the paper in the shape of the rainbow.  they can be dyed either on a hard boiled eggs, or just with the shells.  The kids love this craft.  Also, when ever we make a rainbow, we act out the story of Noah. We put all of our stuffed animals into a boat (made with couch cushions) and the kids are Noah and fam.  I always get to be God...LOL!  They all carry umbrellas, and I squirt them with a squirt bottle.  They totally love it!!! You can finish this story time with the song "Rise and Shine..." *  Here is something that I like to do and the children like it too.  One of the parent's kept these in the child's room so that he would learn the colour words. In my class (15  4-6 year olds) each month was dedicated to a colour day. Some months had two colour days.  For the entire month the children would find playdough of that colour.  They would also find a colour table set out with some items of that colour, as well as the colour word written with different things (eg. on coloured construction paper with coloured marker and crayon, magnetic letters etc.)  The table was also covered with felt of that colour.  The children were invited to bring from home or find in the classroom something of that colour or print the colour word and leave it on the table. One day in that month was dedicated just for that colour.  The children came dressed in that colour (this was voluntary). As the children came in, I would give them a construction paper cut-out of something that colour with the colour word printed on it.  For example an orange pumpkin for orange day or a black bat for black day.  As I was pining this on, I would say, "Happy Orange day, Brandon."  and the children would answer, "Happy Orange day, Mrs. Arone." We would also sing our colour song for the colour day, Oh, have you seen the colour word  (Tune of Do you know the Muffin Man) Oh have you seen the colour word ____________________ (colour of the day) The colour word ____________________ The colour word ____________________ Oh have you seen the colour word _____________________ Just look around the room. (then spell the word) P-U-R-P-L-E (everyone shouts)  PURPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Continue singing by substituting colour word for clap, stamp, jump etc. Then when you spell the word, spell it and clap out the letters or stamp and say the letters etc. The children really liked the song and the cut-out they got.  It was fun. Something else we did when the colour day was a secondary colour, for example Orange, I would have strips or construction paper cut out in a different colour.  I would have the two primary colour set out on paper plates (yellow and red)  The children would put on hand in the yellow and one hand in the red and then set them down on the strip of paper.  We would say the colours together.  Then they would rub their hands together and make the secondary colour and put both their hands on the paper.  We would then say, "When you mix yellow and red together you get orange."  We did this for all the secondary colours.  Messy but great fun. *  RED Lady bug Lady bug, Ladybug, Fly away home! You house is on fire, your children are gone. All but one, and her name is Ann, And she crept under the frying fan. YELLOW Sally Go ROund the Sun Sally go around the sun, Sally go around the moon, Sally go around the chimney-pots On a sunday afternoon! BLUE Little Boy Blue Little boy blue, come blow your horn; The sheep's in the meadow, the cow's in the corn. Where's is the boy who looks after the sheep? He's under the haystack, fast asleep. GREEN Peter Piper Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers; A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked. If Peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, Where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked? ORANGE Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater Peter, peter, Pumpkin eater, Had a wife and couldn't keep her; He put her in a pumpkin shell And there he kept her very well. PURPLE Little Jack Horner Little Jack Horner sat in the corner, Eating a Christmas pie; He put int his thumb, and pulled out a plum, And said, "What a good boy am I!" BROWN Old Woman in a shoe There was an old women who lived in a shoe. She had so many children she didn't know what to do. She gave them some broth without any bread, And sang to them sweetly, and sent them to bed. BLACK Baa Baa Black Sheep Baa, baa, Black sheep, have you any wool? Yes, sir, yes, sir, three bags full; One for my master and one for my dame, And one for the little boy who lives down the lane. *  Yellow... You Are My Sunshine Need: tagboard circle cutout, yellow tissue paper pieces, yellow streamers, gold glitter, and glue. Have the child glue the yellow tissue paper pieces all over the circle cutout to cover it. Then sprinkle glitter over circle. Finish by attaching the yellow streamers to the edges to create a sun. Lemonade!?! Cut a quantity of lemons in half lengthwise. Set several aside to dry slightly. Store the remaining in the refridgerator. Then gather: drying lemon halves, white construction paper, newspaper, and yellow paint. Pour the yellow paint into a pan, and have the child dip the lemon into it. Dab onto newspaper, and then have them make a print on the construction paper. After you finish the prints, make lemonade with the remaining lemons! Ideas This month you can have a "Yellow Day", where you wear yellow, eat yellow foods, do lot's of things outside in the sun. Have lots of arts and crafts that involve the color yellow, or yellow items. You can do these things all on one day, or split them up so that you can do one thing each day. You can also play games that involve yellow: Count yellow counters, name as many things that are yellow as you can, plant yellow flowers, and many many more. Literature Links Yellow Ball written & illustrated by Molly Bang Little Blue and Little Yellow written & illustrated by Leo Lionni Sunshine... Beep Beep! Then have them drive their way to some fun in the sun! Scoop 'n Toss Collect two one gallon milk jugs and a foam ball. Cut the jugs to form a scoop. Take your child outside and have fun playing toss. Make the activity more difficult by moving farther apart. Have Fun! Bubble Bubble Pop Pop! Take bubble solution, white construction paper, shallow pans, and food coloring outside with your child. Pour bubble solution into several shallow pans. Squeeze drops of different color food coloring into each pan. Help your child dip the bubble wand into the pan and blow bubbles onto the paper - make sure you use all the colors!
