*Science: Volcanic Eruption Dinosaur Soap Eggs (with small toy dino inside) Serve Broccoli ("trees") and Lettuce ("leaves") for snack *Math: Make various large cutouts of dinosaurs. Cut several shapes (circles, squares, triangles, etc. -- or draw irregular "bone" shapes) out of tagboard. Use the shapes to draw outlines on each dinosaur -- maybe three or four per dinosaur. Laminate all. Bury the bones or shapes in the sensory table and have children "dig for bones" and match them to the dinosaurs. Photocopy a dinosaur on one side of a paper and its skeleton on the backside, lining up the pictures. Children paint dino, glue to small white paper bag. Shining a flashlight up inside will show the skeleton! Hide dog bones in sensory table Make plaster of paris fossil molds. Hold a scavenger hunt. Draw simple pictures of various areas in the classroom and number from 1-?? Hide the sheets in the classroom (giving the first card to the children) so that when the children look at each card, it leads them to the next card. Have something special hiding (maybe a dinosaur book for story time??) at the last location. Songs: Brontosaurus is my name My footsteps sound like thunder. although I'm large, I'm gentle too. And seldom leave the water. The Triceratops lived long ago in prehistoric time. We know that it was living here by fossils that we find. On its head it had two horns and one was on its snout. To keep it safe, no doubt. (Tune: Where oh where did my little dog go) Oh, where, oh where did the dinosaurs go? Oh, where, oh where can they be? They were much too big to just disappear. It sure is puzzling to me! *Put paper sacks on feet for dino feet and dance around to dino music ( wee sing has a good one) i got this idea from a terrific penpal *Make Dino bones 1 cup peanut butter 1 cup dry milk 2 tbs honey graham crackers crushed combine P.B. and milk add honey mix well divide into equal portions after shaping them into bones sprinkle with crackers *measured out the length of a apatosaurus with yarn 70 feet *collage a cardboard cut out of different dinos * My favorite dino idea is the stegasourus hat. Trace 2 Steg shapes and have the kids cut them out. Then they use all the scrap construction paper from other projects to make the spikes and bigo boppers or markers to color the steggie. We fit it on their heads then and they are a Dino. *We have done the pape mache thing, using a balloon except we made them into easter baskets, I'll save that one for next easter, anyway I was thinking it would be cool to do easter eggs that way and have prizes in them next year. With your dino idea you could make paper mache dino eggs, but when they are dry you pop and remove the balloon, make sure you leave the knotted end sticking out, infact leave the hole at the end large enough to insert a plastic dino, after the balloon is popped. Then after inserting the dino take more paper mache strips and cover the hole let dry one more day ( do this on your own so the kids don't know they are in there). Then hide the eggs (when the kids are not around) have the kids hunt for a nest of dino eggs in the yard, they will be suprised to see the eggs they worked on! Then everyone can choose an egg and open it to find what's inside? Older kids 3 and up can help you paper mache the balloons. You should put at least 2 layers of newsprint on the balloon. When using a balloon you should tie a string to the knotted end and hang to dry over night. Tip - try getting newsprint paper instead of the newspapers. Then you don't have printed eggs! This also helps if you make paper mache easter eggs or baskets because the ink does not show thru if they paint them. Tip - when hiding the eggs they need to stay dry, so if it is raining or there is dew on the ground the egg will become soggy. *You could use brown paper bags and make mountains. Just dampen the bags with water,(very little) then crumble or squeese and form mountains. Then let the kids put some paint on them. Use another for the land and then make some trees to glue on the land. Put the dinos on there and bravo a dino community. You could make a volcano also with the brown bags and paint. Put it all in a cut off cardboard box for a foundation. Or use shoe boxes and make individual small communities for each child. There are lots of snacks that are in dino shapes cookies, jelly candy, animal cookies, ect. Or bake your own with dino cutouts. You could also make your own dinos with clay that hardens. Just let the kids roll out the body, tube shape and four little tubes for the legs, a curved tube for the neck and a ball for the head. Use green clay. Or use green pipe cleaners, with a red fire comming out of their mouths. Knowledge Adventure has a great CD for the computer called 3D Dino, Has dino movies, games and the history of the dinos. You may be able to access Knowledge Adventure on the web. * Anyway, we gave the children each a ball of playdough and they patted it flat on a small paper plate. Then they choose their favorite dinosaur to press in the dough to make a fossil. They love that! We had a dinosaur dig that included sand, spoons, small dinosaurs and "bones" from a Halloween game. We provided each of the children with a copy of a t-rex--their color choice. They glued elbow macaroni on it to represent the dino skeleton. Our story was "Dinosaur Roar" which I have in a big book, which is always fun. It provides plenty of contrast and plenty of opportunities for the children to participate in the actions of the story. It is a good group book. We also played a Mommy/Daddy Dinosaur and Baby game. Again, like "Doggie, Doggie" except we used model dinosaurs, the children were either Mommy or Daddy Dino. "DINOSAUR, DINOSAUR, LOOK AND SEE YOUR BABY IS GONE! WHERE CAN IT BE?" Later in the week I am making the jello eggs with gummi dinosaurs inside for a snack. We also watched Curious George and the Dinosaur and the children also like the Berenstain Bears and the Missing Dinosaur Bone. It helps the children realize that the only place we can see dinosaurs is a museum, as opposed to tv suggesting otherwise. *DINOSAUR HUNT Going on a dinosaur hunt. (slap thighs) And I'm not afraid. (point to self) There's a tall mountain. (look with hand over eyes) Can't go under it. (move hand down) Can't go around it. (move hand around) Guess I'll go over it. (reach hands as if climbing) There's a river. (hands over eyes. NOTE: REPEAT ABOVE ACTIONS AS APPROPRIATE FOR THE REST OF THE CHANT) Can't go over it. Can't go under it Guess I'll swim across it. (move arms as if swimming) There's some tall grass. Can't go over it Can't go around it Guess I'll go through it (slap hands up and down in front) There's a cave! Can't go over it Can't go under it. Guess I'll go in it It's dark and spooky in here (shake) It's cold in here! (wrap arms around self and shiver) I feel some scales (prentend to rub something) I feel some big teeth! (pretend to touch something) OHH! It's a Dinosaur! (screan) Run out of the cave (slap thighs) Go through the grass Swim across the river Climb the mountain Run home (slap thighs) Open the door Jump into bed (cover head with arms as if hiding under a blanket) I went on a dinosaur hunt And I wasn't afraid! Note: For anyone who hasn't done this before (and it's similar to Going on a Bear Hunt) this is a chant. You should say the line first and do the action and then the children will repeat it back to you. Each line has an action. On the obvious ones, I just left it out because it is so much typing! *Dinosaur mountains. Mix together 5 parts sand, 2 parts plaster of paris, and 2 parts water. You may need to add a little more water to make it about the consistancy of pancake batter. Pour it into paper cups. Push into each cup a small plastic dinosaur. When it is hard tear off the paper cup and give the children craft sticks to scrape off the "stone" to find what's inside ( it's really soft and easy). I crumpled up the paper cup before adding the mountain mixture. Then after I took off the paper I rounded off some of the sharp edges and created a few new dips in the flat top. It looked a lot more like a stone that way. *Dinosaur Delight 1/4C dirt(cocoa) 1/2C swamp water(milk with green food coloring) 2C crushed bones (sugar) 1/2C fat(butter) 2C dead grass(uncooked oatmeal) 1/2C squashed bugs(peanut butter) Mix cocoa & milk. Add sugar and butter. Boil about 3 min. Add peanut butter and oatmeal and stir until melted. Remove from heat and stir until mixture begins to thicken, Drop by tabelspoonsful onto waxed paper cool, eat and enjoy..... *Stegosaurus Hats Today we made these hats with 4 large paper plates. The children were instructed to paint the outside of each plate. When this was done we stapled three of the plates together at the inside fold of the plates. The final plate is folded and placed in the opposite direction for the head plate. We then attached yarn to this plate and the kids had a great time being stegosaurus. *Dinosaur Fossils I save all my old playdough and use it to make fossils. I divide it into small balls and the children roll it flat either on a small paper plate or yogurt lid. Then they press small plastic dinosaurs into it. I usually let them harden for a couple of days before I send them home. *Dino shadow matching (folder game-match the dino picture to a black silhouette *dino bean bag toss (toss through the mouth of t-rex) * dino sewing cards *Dinoaurs to the tune of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" Great Big dinosaurs Lived so long ago. Some liked land, and some liked water. Some flew in the air. Great big dinosaurs lived so long ago. Some had horns, and some had spikes. Some had wings like bats. Great big dinosaurs Lived so long ago. Some ate plants, and some ate meat, But now there are no more. (Eastberg) *I found a great book at the library called Monster Soup (sorry I can't find the auther's name) and in it are two great poems relating to dinos. The kids have memorized both because the rhythm of the words roll off of their tongues and are such fun to say. * Coffee Dough 1 cup flour 1 cup coffee grounds 1/2 cup salt 1 cup water 1/4 cup sand Mix ingredients together. Shape into a ball and place thumb in center to form a hole. Place a treasure inside and cover up. Let dry 4 to 5 days. It is suppose to resemble a rock or a pumice stone. Then the child cracks it like an egg. My idea is to shape it like an egg and place a dinosaur inside. Have it crack and let the child be amaze to find a dino inside. *Allosaurus (Tune: "Alouette") Allosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, Apatosaurus, Tyrannosaurus rex! Stegosaurus, Trachodon, Triceratops, Pterandon. Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, Oh... Allosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, Apatosaurus, Tyrannosaurus rex! *Ten Big Dinosaurs (Tune: "10 Little Indians") 1 big, 2 big, 3 big dinosaurs, 4 big, 5 big, 6 big dinosaurs, 7 big, 8 big, 9 big dinosaurs, Ten big dinosaurs! They all lived a long, long time ago. They all lived a long, long time ago. They all lived a long, long time ago. Now there are no more. *Five Enormous Dinosaurs Five enormous dinosaurs, letting out a roar, One went away and then there were four. Four enormous dinosaurs, munching on a tree, One went away and then there were three. Three enormous dinosaurs didn't know what to do, One went away and then there were two. Two enormous dinosaurs having lots of fun, One went away and then there was one. One enormous dinosaur afraid to be a hero, He(she) went away and then there were zero. *Dinosaur foot Skills: Making Predictions, counting Activity: Cut five large dinosaur footprints from large pieces of construction paper or poster board. Divide the class into five groups and have each group predict how many of their foot prints will fit inside the dinosaur's Allow the children to trace their feet onto the dinosaur foot. Have the children repeat if necessary until the dinosaur footprint is covered with footprints. Have the children count their footprints and see how close theirpredictions were. * The Dinosaur Song (Tune: "The Wheels on the Bus ") The tyrannosaurus rex had great big teeth, Great big teeth, great big teeth. The tyrannosaurus rex had great big teeth, When the dinosaurs roamed. Additional verses: The apatosaurus had a very long tail...... The diplodocus' nostrils were on top of his head......... The saltopus was as small as a cat....... * Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs (Tune: Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear) Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, stomped around. Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, shook the ground. Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, some gave fear. Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, we wish you were here. * I'd like to be a Dinosaur (Tune: Mary had a Little Lamb) I'd like to be a dinosaur, dinosaur, dinosaur. And if I was a dinosaur, I would be a _________. (Each child has a turn naming which dinosaur he would like to be)
