Fold a sheet of green construction paper into thirds lengthwise, as if you were folding a letter the wrong way.  You should have 3 x 12 inch. folded paper to serve as an envelope.    Fold bone-colored paper into 3 x 12 inch sections, too.  Cut along creases into 3 x 12 in strips.  On one strip, draw a dinosaur bone that covers the entire length of the strip, the mid-section of the bone will be about 1/1/2 in thick.  Use this first bone as a template.    Since the bone is narrow, try using only 3 long line across it.  Unfold sheets and place a bone in the center of it.  Idea:   Dinosaur Days: Archeological Dig and then the date. ( Would be great to display the day before, to get those little minds thinking!) Caveperson costume-Can be made out of anything that is fuzzy or looks like animal skin.  A piece of fake fur cloth, animal print cotton(leopard, tiger or zebra) or even an old bath or throw rug.( No sewing necessary, cavepeople didn't sew!)    Bath rug or fur cloth      Cut a hole in the center, allowing enough fabric to fall down the front and back of the caveperson evenly, and to drape around each side.  Trim with scissors if necessary.  Tie costume in place, at the waist, with a sash or cord.  Have the caveperson wear solid colored shir and pants under costume.  Creat an ambience for Dino Day is easy.  The setting calls for an abundance of ferns, plants, pebbles and rocks.  Drape lots of green crepe-paper streamers across the ceiling of the room.  Make crepe-paper ferns and hang from the streamers.  Use the dino bone templete to hang from the ceiling . Tape ferns so that they dangle from the back of chairs and the edges of the tablecloth.  Decorate the tablecloth with dinosaur tracks or foodprints. (Some local nurseries or garden centers will donate plants!) Make personalized rocks.  Paint the children's names on the rock and stand a plastic dino on top.  Tape butcher paper on walls and provide tempra paint and brushes. Let the children make a  mural for the walls. Dizzy Dinosaurs-Children are divided into groups(Stegosauruse, Brontosauruses, Triceratops, and Pterodactyls.  Enough chairs are placed in a large circle(facing toward the center) to accomodate all but one child, who will play it.  The child who is IT stands in the center of the circle and announces the dino of his  choice (from the four categories)  All the Triceratops must scramble to change their sets with one another while IT also rushes to get an empty seat. If IT fails to get a seat, he or she becomes a Triceratorps and the displaced dino becomes IT. Fossil Hunt-Variation of the classic Easter egg hunt.  It is suppose to resemble a rock or a pumice stone.   Then the child cracks it like an egg. My idea is to shape it like an egg and place a dinosaur inside.  Have it crack and let the child be amaze to find a dino inside.   * Coffee Dough     1 cup flour    1 cup coffee grounds    1/2 cup salt    1 cup water    1/4 cup sand   Mix ingredients together.  Shape into a ball and place thumb in center to form a hole. Place a treasure inside and cover up.  Let dry 4 to 5 days. Snack Stone Age Shakes (Frosty banana milkshakes)   Prep time: 15 min. 2 C milk 2 ripe bananas 1 Tbsp lemon juice 2 Tbsp. sugar 1 pt vanilla frozen low-fat yogart Mix all in blender and pour into paper cups.  For that added touch, add green food coloring. 3) WHERE DID THE DINOSAURS GO? My 3year old son absolutely loves it.  5) Fossils:  Place clay into the bottom of a small bathroom size cup.  Using a shell or any type of material that will create an imprint, press the item into the clay, and lift.  The deeper the imprint, the better the fossil. Next pour plaster of paris on top of the clay imprint. (Plaster should be the consistency of a thick, thick, milkshake)  Let dry.  Takes approx. 45-60 minutes tops!  Tear cup from the fossil, and seperate the clay fromthe fossil.  Tada! Imprints/plaques:  I use the above procedure with plaster of paris, except I place an oval shaped clay piece on a meat tray, and then using a tiny dinosaur make an imprint of the entire body, you need to "roll" the body in the clay to get all parts.  Then pour plaster over the clay and let dry. Dinosaur eggs:  I use balloons, blown up fairly small, and cover with paper maiche.  Let dry over night.  (Make sure you leave the area where you tied the balloon up available to be seen by the eye for the next day)  Snip the balloon, it is cool how it deflates inside, let the kids watch, no worries about loud pop sounds.  Cut an opening in the top like an egg cracked.  Paint and add dinosaurs. Dinosaur puppets:  I dye tiny white socks green, then let the children glue on features that have been precut from felt.  Very cute! Dinosaur snack:  In a clear cup layer (from top to bottom) Dinosaur cookies, vanilla pudding (sand), chocolate pudding (earth), crushed graham crackers (rocks).  Then the children have their own fossil snack to dig into! Basic art that I include:  Dinosaur sponge painting, dinosaur rubber stamps (they have cool ones with the dinosaurs on the top!), dinosaur stencils, dinosaur templates for rubbings, dinosaur shaped easel paper (pre-cut UGH!) Bones:  I make up salt dough and let the children either mold their own bones, or use bone shaped cookie cutters.  Let dry Skeletons:  Using craft sticks, children glue what they think or want a dinosaur skeleton to look like ** I am a firm believer in the 4 E's curriculum, so I always let the children experience a dinosaur first.  We go to the museum to see the dinosaurs there, and visit the mastadon exibit.  If you don't have this "luxury", try using yarn to show how large dinosaurs really were.  Do a size comparision chart to help them grasp the concepts of size.
