Fall>Understanding
                  Fall is one of the 4 seasons; if follows summer.
                  Fall is the season that warns us that cold weather is
coming.
                 Many changes are taking place out of doors.
 
                  Worktime Interest
                   Nature walk; choose a tree to observe all year.
                   Press leaves between wax paper.
                   Hand tree:  have child trace around hand on construction
 paper; cut and mount on large brown tree on bulletin board.
                   Preserve leaves by dipping in warm water to which 3 or 4
 teaspoons of glycerine have been added.
                   Crayon rubbings.
                   Use crayon shavings to press between wax paper; cut in
 leaf shapes.
                   Leaf spatter painting.

*  Leaf Shape Painting
 tempera paint in fall colors,  leaves in different sizes
 
 The children paint a leaf in fall colors. A brush or sponge may be used for
painting. Display in hall or windows.
 
 Water Leaf Prints (outside activity)
 
 Provide paintbrushes and small buckets of water. The children paint fall
leaves with water, then press them on the cement.Observe the pattern the
print makes. Point out and discuss the vein in the leaf.
 This can be done indoors by using tempera paint instead of the water. The
children paint the leaves and then press them on white construction paper.
 
 Leaf Collecting and Sorting
 
 Take children outside to collect as many leaves as they can find. Go back to
class and have children take turns putting the leaves into groups of small,
medium and large leaves.

 Each autum when the cool wind blows         (Make large blowing gestures)
 The leaves just fall and spin.                       (Spin around)
 I rake them up into a pile                            (Make raking motions)
 And then I jump right in!                              (Jump forward)
 
 The wind takes leaves                                 (Make grabbing motion)
 RIght off the trees                                        (Turn around)
 And sends them floating down.                     (Wave fingers down to
