*Name that Tune I begin humming a few notes to one of our favorite songs. The child that guesses the song, gets to pick (and hum) the next song. ************************************************************************* *Hot or Cold We play this game alot! We take turns hiding something small around the room (I have a wind-up PacMan). Whoever finds the toy gets to hid it the next time. As the children are getting closer to the hidden object we yell out that they are HOT if they are getting further away from it, we yell COLD. Alot of fun! ************************************************************************* *Find things around the room that starts with certain letters I choose a letter, the child walks around the room and looks for something that begins with that letter. When they find it, they get to choose the next letter and child! ************************************************************************* Try having the children rhyme words from the unit you are teaching. Nonsense rhymes count too. Also give fill-in sentences. Another five minute trick is to give them a mixed up sentence from a familiar story, i.e. lamb had Mary a little. We call these standing on one foot games or how to keep the children happy while waiting for our turn to use the music room etc. ************************************************************************* Walking on Clouds Ask the children to pretend to walk on different surfaces: on clouds, in deep mud, on a tightrope, on rocks, on hot pavement, downhill, and uphill. Ask the children for their ideas. ************************************************************************* Some other fillers are the ever popular "I Spy". We do colors and shapes. We also do number and letter games such as " I am thinking of a number between 1 and 20" The children guess and the child who is thinking of the number says whether the correct number is higher or lower than the number guessed. We do the same with the alphabet, telling whether the correct letter is before or after the letter guessed. It is a good way to help reinforce the order of numbers and letters. ************************************************************************* We have been playing a game. Everyone sits in a circle and the first one starts.. I went to the store and I bought a ....loaf of bread... The next child repeats the beginning and adds on another object...... this keeps adding on until everybody has added something to the list.... Great for auditory memory..... You can obviously chang the story line to anything you like.... example..... I went camping and I packed..... I am going to a party and the present I bought was.......
