1) ACTION GAMES Shape Walk Materials: Construction Paper Masking Tape What to Do: Tape a series of geometric shapes to the floor using masking tape a rectangle, square, circle and triangle on the floor (large enough for a few children to stand in). Give the children directions to follow i.e.: Stand in the circle. Sit in the triangle. Hop in the square. Etc. _________________________________________________________________________ Duck, Duck, Goose Materials: None What to Do: This old favorite is a great game for when you have extra time on your hands. Sit in a circle. Choose one person to be the goose. The goose goes around the circle tapping each child on the head while saying "duck, duck..." until he/she taps someone saying, "goose". The new goose has to catch the old goose before they sit back in the circle. If the new goose catches the old goose, then the old goose continues to be "it". If the new goose doesn't catch the old goose then they becomes it. Try to make sure no one is "it" more than 3 times in a row. Scoop 'n Toss Materials: 2 One gallon Milk Jugs Foam Ball What to Do: Collect two one-gallon milk jugs and a foam ball. Cut the jugs to form a scoop. Take your child outside and have fun playing toss. Make the activity more difficult by moving farther apart. Have Fun!                       Giraffe Game Materials: None What to Do: This is the best game! Have the children sit in a circle (or whatever). Ask them if they want to play giraffe (of course they all yell yes!) Then ask the children if they know what kind of sound a giraffe makes, the answer to this question is a giraffe doesn't make any sound! To play, you see who can be the quietest for the longest amount of time. The kids love this game and you get a few minutes of peace and quiet. Alligators Materials: None What to Do: Let the children pretend to be Alligators in a swamp. Call "Alligators Go!" and "Alligators stop!" When the Alligators are all going, they make the short sound of the letter A. when they are stopped, they are very quiet. Stop Drop and Roll Materials: Construction Paper Tape What to Do: To practice Stop, Drop and roll...Tape a construction paper flame to the children and have them roll on the floor until it comes off. 2) Have you ever played the fly-swatter game? You can play it with ANY theme, not just colors and shapes. Divide the class into two teams... On the wall or board tape the shapes, colors, whatever you want the children to learn... The game is played with the two teams in lines..the front two people take a turn and then go to the end of the line... Give clues for the shapes, or just call them out...the two leaders try to 'swat' the shape (or whatever) first...you can tell who 'won' because there swatter will be on the bottom. Keep score or just play for fun... Play it with color words, number words, numbers, feeling/emotion faces, kinds of transportation, etc., endless possibilities... 3) GAMES Potato Hop Materials: Brown construction paper What to Do: Cut ten large potato shapes brown construction paper and number them from 1 to 10.Tape the shapes to the floor in the proper sequence. Then let the children take turns hopping one potato to the other as everyone recites the rhyme. One potato, two potato, Three potato, four Five potato, six potato, Seven potato, more. Eight potato, nine potato, Here is ten. Now let's start all over again. ________________________________________________________________________ Puddle Jumping Materials: Carpet squares What to Do: Place several carpet squares around the room. Have the pretend that the squares puddles. Let them practice jumping into and over the puddles. Coffee Can Bean Bag Throw Materials: 5 large coffee cans or cans the same size duct tape self-adhesive paper permanent marker colored tape Bean bags What to do: Collect five large coffee cans or cans that are the same size. Make sure metal rim is free of jagged edges or cover the edges with duct tape. Cover the cans with self-adhesive paper. Draw the numerals 1 through 5 on the front of each can and mark the corresponding number of dots on each can. Then toss the correct amount of bean bags in each can. ______________________________________________________________________________   Clothesline Fish Materials: Fishing line Clothespins Construction paper What to Do: Prepare a fishing line with numbered clothespins (one through ten) on it. The clothespins should be in sequential order.  Draw and cut out ten fish; write numerals one through ten on them. Have children place numbered fish on the line by matching the correct numerals.   Body Bean Bag Freeze Materials: Bean Bags Music What to Do: move around the room with the beanbag on their head, on their shoulder or on their elbow, while music is playing. When the music stops, the children "freeze" holding the position they are in until the teacher resumes playing the record. ______________________________________________________________________________     Jumping Numbers     Materials:         Paper     Tape     Marker        What to Do:         Write the numbers 1-10 on the papers (one number for each paper) Tape the numbers to the floor, about 2-3 feet apart. Jump to each number starting with 1 and ending with 10.     4) Following Directions Arrange chairs in a circle and put a box of blocks in the center. Invite each child to select a block from the box and find a chair to sit on. Then give the children directions to follow, such as 'Put your block on top of your head; Put your block under your chair; Put your block beside your chair.' Pattern Making Place the wooden blocks on the floor and create a simple pattern with them. Have the children complete the pattern. Let the children have a turn creating a pattern and having a friend complete it. Shape Sort Make a set of four cards (5X8 inches). On each card draw of paste one of the four basic shapes (circle, square, rectangle, triangle). Collect objects that conform to each shape, such as circular toy dishes, bottle caps, square blocks, rectangular dominoes, books and triangular hangers (plastic) and musical instruments. Ask children to sort through the various objects and place them on the card with the appropriate shape. Have the children close their eyes, then remove one of the items. Ask the children to tell you what's missing. Continue the game, changing the items. What's the Order Collect three or four items from around the classroom, for example, block, crayon, book, doll, etc. Arrange the items in a specific order. Ask the children to close their eyes. Change the order of the items. Ask one child to put the items back in the original order. This activity may be done with objects specific to an area of study. Flannel board items may also be used.
