•Who's That Ghost? Seat children in a circle. Choose a volunteer to stand away from the circle and close his eyes. Have a child put a ghost mask over his face. When the other child returns, he tries to guess "Who's that ghost?" •Witch's Spell Have kids form a circle. The Witch (teacher) will stand in the middle of the circle, spin around, then raise her hand and cast a spell on the kids, turning them into a particular animal. Say: "Hocus, Pocus, Ala Kazam! Turn into dogs, if you can!" To change all animals back into kids: Say: "Hocus Pocus Ala Kazam! Now turn back into you!" Dog, cat, bird, cow, rabbit, fish, horse, sheep, ghost, witch, etc. • Halloween Make-up 1 T. white shortening 2T. cornstarch 1 tsp. white flour 4-5 drops food coloring (One tablespoon shortening mixed with 2 1/2 tsp. cocoa makes great brown) • Halloween Stories Clifford's Halloween One Dark Night by Edna Mitchell Preston The Witch Next Door by Norman Bridwell The Tale of the Black Cat How Spider Saved Halloween by Robert Kraus The Big, Big Pumpkin Witches Four by Marc Brown Popcorn by Frank Asch Arthur's Halloween Costume by Lillian Hoban The Magic Pumpkin by Lucille Sette Halloween with Morris and Boris by Bernard Wiseman The Trip by Ezra Jack Keats Georgie and the Robbers by Robert Bright • Whisper (Say it in a quiet, spooky voice and finish with a shout. The kids love it.) Listen, listen. ( Hand behind ear) Goblins are there. (Point to the door) Hear them tiptoe To your chair? Don't speak a word. (Finger to lips) Don't go "ah-choo!" ( finger under nose) Don't move about. ( sit very still with arms close to sides) Or they'll get YOU!!! (Shout "you" and Jump up with arms extended) • Witch hats Black and yellow construction paper, sturdy paper long enough to fit around a child's head Cut a large triangle from black paper to form the hat. Add a yellow strip about one inch wide, about one inch or so from the base of the triangle for a hat band. Use the scraps of black (or use any color from your scrap box) to cut long strips for hair and glue to the base of the hat. Fit a one inch band of sturdy paper or light cardboard around the child's head and staple. Staple or glue the hat to the band. • Pumpkins on a Fence Fence -Cut long strips from brown paper for the rails and a few shorter ones for the posts. Glue on to a background paper. Pumpkins - Cut circles from orange paper for pumpkins & glue them along the top of the fence. Draw or paste a different face on each pumpkin. Add a stem to the top. Add anything else you want to finish the scene. • Buy a small pumpkin. Have the children sit in a circle and play a Halloween version of "hot potato" using Halloween or "spooky sounds" music. • Outline a ghost on a large piece of oaktag & tape it to a wall. Make eyes out of black construction paper and put two-sided tape on the back. Blindfold the children and "Pin the eyes on the ghost!" • Spider Cookies Use one package of Pillsbury Peanut Butter Cookie Dough (or make your own dough from scratch). Roll into walnut sized balls. In each ball, insert 8 pretzel sticks (the small ones). Bake as directed on package, cool, and eat. My dcks had a great time with this. The older dcks also made insects using 3 smaller balls of dough and raisins for eyes. • The children fingerpaint directly on our plastic topped table with orange paint. When the children are finished painting, press pre-cut paper (a large pumpkin shape) on each child's work to capture the print.. The next day when the pumpkins are dry, have the children glue on a stem precut from green construction paper - any place on the pumpkin is fine. The pumpkins look good displayed along the classroom walls. For vines, I use lengths of green curling ribbon to connect the pumpkins to each other by their stems and add leaves here & there. •Fingerplay: See my great big scary eyes, (Ring around your eyes with your hands while moving slowly to see all the children) Look out now for a big surprise (remove hands) Boo! • Dramatic Play- Peek-a-Boo Ghost Play peek-a-boo ghost with a small white blanket (crib sized). The adult gets down on the floor & puts the blanket over her head & shoulders. When she takes it off, she says, Boo! I see you. Some children will want to put the blanket over their head & have a turn. Those who don’t want a turn enjoy watching the others. • Make orange play dough and roll it into balls (little pumpkins). • Two or three days before Halloween, the children decorate their treat bags, (white lunch sacks) with black, orange and green makers and Halloween stickers. • Trick or Treat Rehearsal - The theory behind this activity is, after this trial run at school, the children know more what to expect on the big night, and will be more relaxed and can enjoy it more. Right before morning snack time, one adult stands behind a closed door, while another adult helps the children knock & say trick or treat. The first adult opens the door, admires the children’s costumes, etc. Then s/he gives them a healthy treat for their bag. Repeat this scenario a couple more times. Emphasize to the children that they must wait to eat their treats until mom or dad makes sure everything is safe. •Flying Witches (Sing to the tune of "When the Saints Come Marching In") Oh, when the witches Come flying by. Oh, when the witches come flying by, It will be Halloween night, When the witches come flying by. • Have You Made a Jack-O-Lantern (Sing to the tune of "Muffin Man") Have you made a jack-o-lantern, A jack-o-lantern, a jack-o-lantern, Have you made a jack-o-lantern For Halloween night? • Jack-O-Lantern I am a pumpkin, big and round. (show size with arms) Once upon a time, I grew on the ground. (point to the ground) Now I have a mouth, two eyes, and a nose. (point to each) What are they for do you suppose? (point to forehead & "think") Why-I'll be a jack-o-lantern on Halloween night. • Five Little Witches Five little witches standing by the door. (hold up five fingers) One flew out and then there were four. (Flying motion with hand) Four little witches standing by a tree. (four fingers) One went to pick a pumpkin and then there were three. (picking motion with three fingers) Three little witches stirring their brew. (stir) One fell in and then there were two. (two fingers) Two little witches went for a run. (run with fingers) One got lost and then there was one. (one finger) One little witch, yes, only one. (one finger) She cast a spell and now there are none. (make motions as if to cast spell and then put hands in lap). • The Friendly Ghost I'm a friendly ghost-almost! (point to self) And I chase you, too! Cut out of black paper. Add popsicle stick handle and colorful streamers on the side. •Make a mystery box by cutting an opening about 2 inches high on one narrow side and another opening about 4 inches high on the opposite side. Decorate the box as you like with glitter glue, stampers, and markers. Have someone put objects into the box one by one through the large opening. The Guesser puts his hand through the small hole and tries to figure out what each object is by feeling it. Items to place inside box: Tarantula---Twisted chenille sticks Spiderweb-- Coat string with a mixture of white glue and water. Let dry. Worms--Cook pasta Eyeballls-- Peeled grapes or hardboiled eggs Mice or Mole-- Fake Fur Teeth-- Tines of a plastic fork Monster Hand---3cups of cold water, 3/4 cup cornstarch, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, green food coloring, and a disposable plastic glove. Stir ingredients together in a saucepan. Place over heat, and bring to a boil, stirring until thickened. Let it cool a few minutes until it can be handled. Have someone hold the glove open while another spoons the warm mixture into it, pushing the mixture down into each finger. Fasten the opening securely with a twist tie or duct tape. It can be used warm or cold, and keeps quite well. If you want a lumpy hand, mix just 1/2 cup of the cornstarch to the cold water at the beginning, and add the last 1/4 cup after the mixture has started to thicken over the heat. • Jack-o-Lantern Centerpiece Make a double batch of crispy rice cereal treats. You'll need slightly less than one batch for the lid and a full batch for the bottom. Lid--- Line a small mixing bowl with wax paper. With buttered fingers, press about half of the warm mixture into the bowl, making the sides 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. When it's completely cool, remove it from the bowl, loosening the sides with a knife. Trim the lid to the desire height. For the stem, "glue" on half of a chocolate cake roll with chocolate frosting. Bottom---Tape a long piece of aluminum foil, folded double, around the outside of the same (clean) mixing bowl. It should extend 2 inches above the rim. Line the bowl with waxed paper. Press the mixture into the bowl and about 1 1/2 inches up the foil. The bottom should be about 1 1/2 inches thick and the sides about 1 inch thick. Let the shape cool, then remove it from the bowl. To finish, cut a jack-o-lantern's face into the bottom. Don't cut the mouth all the way through. Fill the centerpiece with popcorn, candy, and other small treats. • Brain Salad 1 3-ounce package tapioca pudding 1 3-ounce package vanilla pudding 1 4-ounce-size Cool Whip 2 cups seedless green grapes 2 cups miniature marshmallows 1 6-ounce jar maraschino cherries green food coloring Make the puddings. Spoon the salad into individual serving bowls, alternating with spoonfuls of cherry juice. Top with extra cherries. • Witch's Crunch In a large cauldron (bowl), mix 2 1/2 cups of crushed bat wings(blue corn chips), with 1 cup each of frog eyes(corn nuts), lizard gizzards(raisins), legs of rat(pretzel sticks), fish ribs(shoestring potato sticks), and mole bones(cheese sticks). Sprinkle 1/2 cup of hearts of newt(shelled pistachios) on top. •Mother Goblin's Lullaby Go to sleep, my baby goblin, hushaby, my dear of dears, if you disobey your mother, she will twist your pointed ears. Little goblin, stop complaining, time for all jour eyes to close, if you make your mother angry, she will bite your tiny nose. Slumber sweetly till tomorrow, do not worry, Mother's near, dream of demons weirdly screaming, hushaby, my goblin dear. •I Am a Ghost Who's Lost His Boo I am a ghost who's lost his boo, my boo is gone from me, and I'm without a single clue to where my boo might be. It makes me mope, it makes me pout, it almost makes me moan, a ghost is not a ghost without a boo to call his own. My boo was piercing ,fierce and loud, I used to strut and boast, for I was positively proud to be a gruesome ghost. But now that I'm without a boo, I find it rather weird, There's little for a ghost to do whose boo has disappeared. Although I hover here and there, and haunt a hundred rooms, it seems there's no one I can scare unless my boo resumes. I am a ghost who lost his boo, alas! A boo I lack, if you should find my boo, then you had better give it back.
