•Lulu Goes to Witch School by Jane O'Connor It was the first day of witch school. Lulu witch was happy .She was scared too. She had never been to witch school before. Lulu could not eat her frosted snake flakes. She felt as if bats were inside her tummy. Part of Lulu wished she was little, like Witch Baby. Part of Lulu wished she was staying home with Mama Witch too. Lulu got her new broom and her lunch box with Dracula on it. "Good -bye," she called. Mama witch kissed Lulu witch. Witch Baby waved bye-bye. Lulu walked to witch school as fast as she could. She did not want to be late. Lots of little witches were going into the witch school. A big witch stood at the door. "Hello. I am Miss Slime," she said. "I am your teacher.' "Hello. I am Lulu witch," said Lulu. Miss Slime smiled. She had a long nose and a wart on her chin. Lulu thought Miss Slime was very pretty. Miss Slime took Lulu to her classroom. "Here is your cubbyhole," Miss Slime told Lulu. "It has a picture of a bat on it. You can put your broom and your lunch box here." Lulu sat down at a big table. A little witch with curly hair sat next to her. "Hello. I am Lulu Witch," said Lulu. "Hello. I am Sandy Witch," said the little witch with curly hair. "Do you have your own magic wand?" "No," said Lulu Witch. "I do," said Sandy Witch. "DO you have your own broom?" asked Lulu Witch. "Of course," said Sandy Witch. "I got my first broom when I was three." Lulu Witch and Sandy Witch had to stop talking. Miss Slime was standing in front of the class. She told all the little witches how busy they were going to be in school. First they sang a song called "Happy Witches Are We." Sandy Witch already knew the words. Then they drew pictures. Sandy Witch's picture was so good Miss Slime put it on the wall. At snack time Sandy Witch got to pass out the lizard tarts. After the little witches ate their tarts, Miss Slime told them to get their brooms. She was going to show them how to fly. Miss Slime and all th little witches went out into the graveyard. One by one the little witches tried to fly on their brooms. One little witch fell as soon as she took off. One little witch bumped into a tree. One little witch wobbled up and down. At last it was Lulu's turn. Up , up, up she flew. She did not wobble. She did not bump into anything. She even flew backward all the way down. "Very good, Lulu!" said Miss Slime. Lulu witch smiled. Miss Slime was proud of her! Then it was Sandy Witch's turn. Sandy Witch flew backward. Sandy Witch flew upside down. Sandy Witch flew in a loop-the-loop. Sandy Witch even flew with no hands! "Wow!" shouted the little witches. When Lulu Witch got home, Mama Witch asked, "How was school?" "I like my teacher," said Lulu Witch. "But I do not like one witch in my class. She is best at everything." "Maybe you will like her better tomorrow," said Mama Witch. Lulu Witch did not like Sandy Witch any better the next day. At lunch Sandy Witch said, "Your rat liver sandwich looks rotten." "It does not," said Lulu Witch. "It tastes good." Sandy Witch looked at Lulu Witch's sandwich and held her nose. She got another little witch to hold her nose too. That night Mama Witch asked, "How was school?" "I still do not like that witch," said Lulu Witch. "She is mean." "Then be extra nice to her," said Mama Witch. "It's hard to be mean when someone is extra nice." The next day Lulu Witch said to Sandy Witch, "Do you want to play with me?" "Okay," said Sandy Witch. "We will play Monster in the Middle. Lulu is the monster." Sandy Witch and Hazel Witch threw a ball back and forth. Lulu Witch tried to catch it. But Sandy Witch always grabbed the ball away. "Lulu can't catch! Lulu can't catch!" Sandy Witch shouted. Then she bounced the ball on Lulu's head. After school Lulu Witch ran home. "I was nice," she told her mother. "It did not work. I do not like that witch at all." "Do not look so mad," said Mama Witch. "I have a surprise. I made a dress for you." Mama Witch held up the dress. It was gray with spiders on it. "Thank you, Mama!" said Lulu Witch. "I will wear it to school tomorrow." The next morning Miss Slime said, "That is a very pretty dress." "Thank you, said Lulu Witch. Then Miss Slime told the class, "Today I will teach you how to spell." "Hooray!" cried the little witches. Sandy Witch out up her hand. "I know how to spell already," she said. "Will you show the class?" asked Miss Slime. Sandy Witch stood up. She got out her magic wand. "First you close your eyes," said Sandy Witch. "Then you wave your magic wand. And then you say the magic words.' Sandy Witch looked right at Lulu Witch. Then she waved her magic wand. She said, "Hocus-pocus Watercress, Watch me change old Lulu's dress!" All of a sudden Lulu Witch felt something go Pop! She looked down at her new dress. Oh no! Sandy Witch had changed the spiders into flowers. Her new dress looked so ugly now. Miss Slime saw that Lulu Witch was mad. She made Sandy Witch change the flowers back into spiders. But Lulu was still mad. "I can't stand that little witch," Lulu told her mother She wished she did not have to go to witch school. She wished she never had to see Sandy Witch again. The next day Lulu woke up. Her head hurt. Her eyes did too. She went to the mirror. "Slippery snake guts!" she shouted. There were spots - big red spots - all over her face. Lulu ran to find Mama Witch. "I bet that old mean Sandy Witch put another spell on me." "No, dear," said Mama Witch. "I am afraid you have lizard pox!" Mama Witch made Lulu Witch get back to bed. "You cannot go to school today," Mama Witch told her. Lulu was glad. Mama Witch brought Lulu Witch a big bowl of dragon noodle soup. It made Lulu feel better. Later Mama Witch read a nice scary story to Lulu Witch. The next day Lulu drew pictures. She did puzzles and she played with her haunted doll house. Was she glad not to see Sandy Witch! The day after that Lulu wanted to fly her broom outside. "No dear," said Mama Witch. Lulu started to play with Witch Baby. "No, dear," said Mama Witch. "I do not want Witch Baby to catch lizard pox." "There is nothing for me to do," Lulu said. She wondered what Miss Slime and the little witches were doing at witch school. The next day Mama Witch said Lulu Witch was ready to go back to witch school. Deep down Lulu was happy. She got her broom and her lunch box with Dracula on it. "Good-bye," she called to Mama and Witch Baby. Lulu walked to school as fast as she could. She knew Sandy Witch was going to make fun of her spots. But she was not going to get mad. If the other little witches laughed, Lulu was going to laugh too. So there! Lulu Witch walked into the classroom. She put her broom in the cubbyhole with the bat on it. "Welcome back!" said Miss Slime. "We missed you." Lulu sat down at the big table. Where was Sandy Witch? She did not see her. Then Sandy Witch came in the door. There were spots all over her face! "You had lizard pox!" Lulu Witch ad Sandy Witch shouted at the same time. Sandy Witch sat down next to Lulu Witch. "You look funny," said Sandy Witch. "You do too," said Lulu Witch. They both laughed. "I bet I have more spots than you," said Sandy Witch. "You do not!" said Lulu Witch. "We will count and see." Lulu Witch counted the spots on Sandy Witch's face. There was 67. Then Sandy Witch counted Lulu's spots. Lulu had 69! For once she had done something better than Sandy Witch. "You win," said Sandy Witch. Lulu smiled. •A fistful of ghosts With a flick of the wrist, a handprint becomes a ghost! Make a paint pad from a folded, wet paper towel and white paint. When finished with story there should be a jack-o-lantern face on the paper. A little green goblin was out all alone on Halloween night. It was terribly dark and there were strange noises in the air. The little goblin shook with fright. "What am I doing?" the goblin said. "I'm supposed to be frightening people. I'm not supposed to be afraid. But it's scary being all my myself. Maybe I can find a friend." So follow along with me while we go with the goblin to look for a Halloween friend. The little green goblin got out his map and folded it in 1/2 like this. (Fold paper in 1/2 with the fold facing the bottom) He ran around the edge of the cemetery looking for a friend, like this. (keeping the fold on the bottom, cut out paper from the left bottom corner fold around top corners to bottom right corner in one continuous arch. To look like a 1/2 circle) But no one was there. he flew to the enchanted forest and perched in a tree, like this (on the left side of the semi-circle, fold still on the bottom, cut jagged lines to resemble an evergreen tree. The bottom of the tree should be cut out of the fold completely, but the top off the tree should not reach the top of the semi-circle) But no one was there. Then he crept to a cave and peeked inside, like this (In the middle of the fold, next to the "tree" on right hand side cut a straight line, with a diagonal adjacent line. A triangle should appear when cut completely through the fold) But no one was there. There where cobwebs everywhere. He wiggled his nose into the cobwebs and danced in a circle like this. (Cut a circle into the right hand corner of the semi-circle make sure to go through both sides of the paper, but should not be near the fold. Put the scissors down and open the paper.) BOO!! There was Mr. Jack-o-lantern looking right at him. The little green goblin finally found a halloween friend. >> --------------------- Forwarded message: Subj: Curric: Monthly: Halloween - part 5 Date: 97-09-19 01:47:09 EDT From: Wiggy516 To: AMOM Chryl,AMOM Wanda,LindaFDC To: Shmissteri,Thregr8kdz,Wiggy516 To: ANewHeart,Ariel 610,BobbieFDC To: CBDBree,CGFGFREEE,Dizee70 To: Dkelkins,Eibbil,Fishkissy To: GIBBYGGG,HTWHLZ,Jeanet3814 To: Kenisons6,Kjjt,KJP40,Lea098 To: Lorris4,LOSTN 78,Luv3kids,Mandap To: Mlori1,MrciaJones,Nan1003 To: Nancy235,Nunflying,PBeach3040 To: PObrien788,PRO CALIF,PScml To: Queenbe352,Rckably,Su F 4 To: The4mitchs,TOcon41865,TRACODAND To: UCrawf123,WHansen1,ZRJ,AnneW1 To: Arlc1,AuntGill,BECKYLEM,Bedon1 To: Bethsmom1,BHuhtala,BROWN893 To: BunniePtch,CA55IE,CANTfam To: Cath no1,CBlac113,CCPPIN,CDA Jen To: Cechs,Cia0,CTharion,Cyn4kids To: DAYCMOM,DENCRE,DKnow624,DSinVA49 To: ECook58656,Elegantmom,FBercaw To: FDC Fun,FIREWIFE25,Flannel63 To: GnBGras,GOSColleen,HERR0728 To: Himies4me,Holcombcj,HUGSKISS2 To: Im1031bb,Ivegotkids,JEAN4KIDS To: JFoga143,Jkel110,JoyD RN To: JThomas610,JUDYMULLER,KallieS To: KGWolek,KShadow4U *Lulu Goes to Witch School by Jane O'Connor It was the first day of witch school. That would be easier than pumpkins i think!! *BULLETIN BOARD DECORATION: Cover board with black construction paper. Make a large yellow moon for center of board with a black silhouette of a witch flying on her broomstick. Day 1 project: Kids draw and cut out pumpkins from orange constr.paper. Cut out eyes, noses, mouths from black constr.paper and paste on pumpkins. Add a green stem. The pumpkins should be placed along the bottom of the bulletin board, with a small sign saying "The pumpkin patch". Day 2 project: Use white tissue paper. Crumple a ball of tissue paper for stuffing a ghost's head. Place a sheet of white tissue paper over the crumpled ball and tie a srting around the neck of the ghost (or use a rubber band). Kids can paste or draw eyes on. Place the ghosts on the bulletin board so they look as if they are flying around the moon. *Make HALLOWEEN SPIDERS: Use 2 flat white paper plates--a smaller plate for the head, a larger plate for the body. Overlap the plates slightly and staple them together. Have kids paint their spiders black on both sides. Let dry. Punch 4 holes on each side of the body. Punch 2 more holes at the "neck" of the spider. Insert a pipe cleaner in each pair of punched holes and bend it to look like legs. Thread black yarn through the holes in the neck to the spider can be hung. Glue small white pom-poms or plastic moveable eyes on the head. *PLASTIC SPOON WITCH PUPPET: You will need plastci spoons, moveable eyes, felt, pipe cleaners, yarn and construction paper. Kids glue the various materials to the spoon to create their witch. (May want to help with cutting out black felt witch hats). Pipe cleaner can be wrapped around spoon to create arms. A pipe cleaner broom can be made too. Use yard for witch hair. *SPONGE PAINTED GHOSTS: Using a white crayon or white chalk, draw the shape of a ghost on black construction paper. Let the kids use small sponges to dab white paint on to fill in the inside of the ghost. *Song: GOBLINS IN THE DARK (Sung to tune of "Farmer in the Dell") The goblin the dark, the goblin in the dark Hi-ho on Halloween, the goblin in the dark. The goblin takes a witch, the goblin takes a witch Hi-ho on Halloween, the goblin takes a witch. One having a circle nose and one have diamonds for eyes etc. Keep one card out at all times to the comparison card. Lay one of the drawing next to the comparison card Have children try to discern what the difference is between the 2. Repeat til all the cards have been compared. *Halloween countdown. about 2 weeks before the holiday make a black and orange paper chain. Take 1 off a day till Halloween *Pumpkin patch: each child paints a paper bag orange. When dried, stuff with newspaper and tie off at top with green pipecleaner. Curl the edges of the pipecleaner to look like a vine. You may have children paint jack-o-lantern faces if you want. When they are all finished connect them together with green crete paper to create the pumpkin patch. *Witch witch ghost: Variation of duck duck goose *Little Green Goblin: cutting instructions in bold type Cut out of a orange construction the story paper while reading to children.
