To The Hospital Sung to: Are You Sleeping To the hospital, to the hospital, We will go. We will go. We will see the doctors, We will see the nurses, Dressed in white, dressed in white. (Tune: My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean) I'm happy that I am a doctor I can help to make people feel well I'm happy that I am a doctor It makes me feel just swell I'm a doctor, a doctor I help to make people feel well well well I'm a doctor, a doctor I can help to make people feel well! The Doctor's Song Sung to the tune: Row, Row, Row Your Boat. I use a stethoscope To listen to your heart. To help you be a healthy child And heal you when you're aren't. (Tune of Farmer In the Dell) The doctor makes us well. The doctor makes us well. Hey! Ho! What do you know? The doctor makes us well. Doctor's Bags Materials: black construction paper red contruction paper] stapler white chalk items such as band-aids, cotton balls, etc.... 1. Fold the black paper in half and draw a docot bag on it so that the fold is the bottom of the bag. 2. Cut it out and staple the sides together 3. Cut a red cross out of the red paper and glue it on the bag 4. Write Dr. **** on the other side of the bag 5. Put cotton balls, band-aids, and whatever else you would find in a doctor bag that the kids could play with. Doctor- Make headbands for doctors white strips then a circle for the center that the children cover with pieces of tin foil for the light (mirror). Stethoscope: Have the children paint each the cuped areas of a egg carton (cut up one for each child) then poke a hole and put a piece of yarn through for their stethoscopes. Thermometers- Create pretend thermometers by cutting clear plastic straws into halves. Use a permanent black marker to make lines on one side of each straw half. Band-aid pictures. Give each child a band-aid and a sheet of paper. Have them put the band-aid on their paper and then draw a picture. Ask them to tell you what has happened in their picture and write it on the paper. Cotton swab paintings. Let children paint a design with cotton swabs. Make nurses hat. Fold up white paper, and put a big red cross on front. Hospital Kit For Dramamtic Play Purpose: to provide opportunities for role playing experiences, e.g., doctor, patient, etc. To act out fear or real experiences associated with a hospital stay To become familiar with what happens in a doctor's office To experiment with roles without sex sterotyping, e.g., girls can be doctors, boys can be nurses Materials needed: White sheets, white shirts or lab coats, Red Cross head bands Medical bag includes: bandages, band aid boxes, medicine bottles, stethoscopes, tongue depressors, plastic test tubes, roll of masking tape to be cut and used as band-aids. I don't feel comfortable about using hypodermic syringes in the kit, so use your own judgement concerning using them. Child-sized crutches, small cot or mat, small table, dolls, etc. Make a Nurse's Cap: Provide the experience of making nurse's caps. Begin with a piece of white construction paper 12" X18" for each hat. Mark point A at the halfway point on the 18" side, and then mark two more points 2" on each side of this point. These will be B and C. Mark a point 5" down from each corner, D and E, and with a magic marker, draw a curved line from B to D and from C to E. Mark a line 3" from the bottom edge, F to G. The child can then cut along the curved line. He/she folds the paper up, creasing on the marked line, FG, and glues points B to D and C to E, overlapping to fit his/her head. This may be stapled by the teacher, if preferred. (I hope this makes sense) After the children have completed the caps, let them use them for role playing.
