ANIMAL SWIM RINGS Give each child an inflated animal swim ring to wear around his or her waist. Have the children pretend to be the animals represented by their rings. Encourage them to move like their animals. Adapt the song below to fit the animal rings your children have and sing a verse for each child. Sung to : "Frere Jacques" I'm a duck, I'm a duck, Watch me waddle, watch me waddle. Hear me when I talk, Hear me when I talk. Quack, quack, quack; quack, quack, quack. SENSORY POOL Blow up an inflatable wading pool. Fill it partway with crumpled-up pieces of newsprint. Let one or two children at atime climb in the pool and play with the newsprint. Can they bury their hands under the newsprint? What sounds does it make? Variation: Instead of newsprint, use small plastic balls, packing styrofoam, etc. Just be sure that the children are old enough to know not to put things in their mouth. WATER POOL Blow up an inflatable wading pool outside and fill it partway with water. Place plastic cups and funnels, small plastic boats and other water toys in the pool. If desired, add a few plastic containers with holes punched in the bottoms to use as "rain makers." Let the children sit around the outside of the pool and experiment with the water and the toys in it. INSIDE AND OUTSIDE Blow up an innertube and plce it on the floor. Give the children instructions such as "Find a block and place it inside the innertube. Find a toy car and place it outside the Innertube." Variations: Have the children take turns sitting inside and outside of the innertube. BEACH BALL ROLLING Have the children sit in a circle with their legs apart and their feet touching. Put several inflated beach balls inside the circle. Have the children roll the balls back and forth to one another. BEACH BALL KICK Take the children to a large open area and give each one an inflated beach ball. Let the children practice kicking the balls all around: on the ground, in the air, forward, backward and any other way they can think of. INNERTUBE TOSS Blow up an innertube and hang it from a clothesline at the children's level. Set out several beanbags or small balls. Let the children take turns trying to toss the beanbags or balls through the innertube. INNERTUBE STACKING Inflate several innertubes. (Use ones in different sizes, if possible.) Let the children use the innertubes for stacking and building. How many can they stack by placing one on top of the other? Can they build a wall with the innertubes?
