•O Necklaces Have the children string Cheerios on yarn or string. Be sure you knot the one end before they start stringing their necklace to prevent the O's from falling off. •O Button Pictures Give each child a handful of buttons or O-shaped cereal to glue to a paper in the shape of an O. Encourage the children to use their imaginations to create a picture around the O, using the letter as part of the design. Example, the outline of a face. •Duck, Duck, Goose Sit in a circle (the letter O) and play the game of Duck, Duck, Goose. •Boiled Octopus Take a hot dog and cut a + from each end towards the center. DO NOT cut completely to the center. Place the cut hot dog into boiling water for a minute or two and the ends will curl up and the hot dog will resemble an Octopus. * Try using Oatmeal either on a table and have the children use little cars to zoom Over the road.... Or in your sand table for another tactile experience. * Monday: colored the big and little letter Oo on a ditto and glued on cheeriOs. Tuesday: made an octopus, gave the kids the head and body and they added on eight different colored legs. Wednesday:we made an owl, had outline of body, the kids glued on cupcake liners for eyes and triangles for nose and mouth Thursday: we painted with orange paint and used cups and film canister dipped in paint to make O's on paper Friday: an orange ostrich made from two ovals and pieces of string * Here are some of the things my kindergarteners did during Oo week: We made an octopus. We traced and cut out a 9 inch circle from construction paper. Then I had them count 8 strips of 1"X12" colorful construction paper. They glued them onto the circle and then decorated it using other art materials. They wrote the number 8 on each tentacle. We talked about the meaning of octopus, octagon, and octet ( a group of 8 singers). We learned about opposites. I made two simple bird puppets out of felt. Each had a pocket in the front to hold opposites cards. We used this poem from Mailbox magazine... Two little birds play an opposite game. Empty and full were the little birds names. Fly away empty Fly away full Come back empty Come back full. We substituted different opposite cards each time we said the poem. (I hope this made sense!)
