* You can have each child decorate a square piece of paper. When they are all complete, put them together to make a "quilt". Talk about "questions" What is a question, ask and answer some questions, etc. When we do our letter of the week we always include a project where the children glue, paint or draw something that begins with that letter on a large block letter traced on construction paper, ie. question marks on "q" ,gold glitter on "g". feathers on "f", etc. You can have each child make their own "quill" pen with a straw whose tip has been cut on an angle to form the writing end (dipped in thinned out black paint) and a construction paper feather that they cut and can be stapled or glued to the straw. (We do this during our unit on Colonial America) * A REAL CLASS QUILT beforehand take snapshots of each child working in the classroom...or let the children take pictures with a disposable camera around the school or classroom....after they are developed let the kids arrange the pics in a quilt like fashion. use a hole punch and bright colored yarn to connect the opictures and hang it up in your room.....the kids in my class go back to our quilt day after day and have awesome discussions about the photos and the process of making our quilt!!! * How about Q-tip collages... we used them for X to make bones in an Xray... Also a class quilt is great fun. Each child gets a piece of paper to draw or water color or what ever medium you choose... Then tape together and draw little x's around each edge looking like sewing stitches.... Do Quarter rubbings. * "Quietly, quickly, quivering... How many ways can you move? Begin a chart to list all the ways children can think of to move...not necessairly beginning with Q. Cut out a Q shape out of heavy paper. Cover with things that begin with Q. Make a quilt qith paper scraps to cover it, cover in quarters, pictures of queens, or questions marks. I Like Q Q is for a queen with a crown on her head, Q is for quilt that covers my bed. Q is for questions I like asking, Q is for ducklings' quack, quack, quacking. Q is for quarter and quick and quill, I like Q and I qlways will. * I got these letter Q ideas from The Complete Letter Book by Michele Borba and Dan Ungaro. The book has multisensory activities for teaching sounds and letters. Queen Make a tagboard face pattern to trace on a piece of paper. Make a Queen crown pattern to trace on foil or gold wrapping paper. Patterns are cut out and glued accordingly. The crown is decorated with glitter, sequins, etc. The queens face may be decorated with markers or crayons. ME Quilt Have each child decorate a circle to look like themselves. Use yarn for hair, buttons for eyes. Glue onto a piece of paper. Punch holes on the sides of the paper and lace to another paper until a Quilt is formed. You can also do this with fabric if you are feeling real creative. Quills In a class demonstration, cut the tip of a feather in such a manner to make a pen tip. Children may then write with the quill by dipping the quill in ink or paint. * How about helping the children make a quilt?? Either out of paper (use a hole puncher and yarn to loop together) or out of material. The children could draw a picture with fabric crayons on fabric to be sewn together into a quilt (possibly by a parent who is willing to volunteer!) Totline's Alphabet Theme-a-Saurus had this cute song: I'm a Busy Quilter (sing to the tune of "Eensy Weensy Spider") I'm a busy quilter, I sew and sew all day. When my quilts are finished, I can stop and play. Sometimes my quilts are fancy, Sometimes I make them plain. Sometimes my quilts are different, Sometimes they're all the same. by Jean Warren Maybe you could have a parade of quilts...all the children could bring a quilt from home for show and tell. * Quickie Quesadilla Place a small tortilla in a frying pan.
