On the walls, put up pictures of the Sesame Street characters Big Bird Asks, How tall can you be? Make a big bird on a poster by using one poster board on top of another so it’s really big! For feathers, use yellow tissue paper balls to fill in his body. Sing: How tall can you be? How tall can you be? (stand on toes and stretch arms in the air) Big Bird asks, how tall can you be? What are we waiting for - Let’s do some more. How small can you be? How small can you be? (get down on the floor into a ball) Big Bird asks, How small can you be? What are we waiting for - Lets do some more. How high can you jump? How high can you jump (jumping on two feet - some are just learning how) Big Bird asks, How high can you jump? What are we waiting for - Lets do some more. How fast can you walk? How fast can you walk? Big Bird asks, How fast can you walk? What are we waiting for Let’s go outside You can also measure each child against the Big Bird poster and write down their height. If you repeat this theme again at the end of the year, compare how much the children have grown. Art Activity - Cookie or Oscar Easel Painting - color choice of blue or green. The children free-form paint. After the pictures are dry, help them glue on either pre-cut Oscar the Grouch eyes, with the heavy eyebrows attached or pre-cut Cookie Monster eyes. Feed Cookie Monster You’ll need a box that’s about 14 x 10 x10 with the open end at the top Cover the front of a box with Cookie’s face and hands, out of construction paper. Cut a hole for the mouth large enough for bean bag cookies to go through. Glue black felt over the mouth opening so it can’t be seen. Slit the felt across the middle of the mouth, so that the cookie bags can still go through. Make five or six the cookie bean bags out of brown felt, fill with rice instead of beans. Zig zag stitch twice around each cookie. (I also use the same cookies with a Santa face box at Xmas) Set Cookie (the box) on a three foot shelf with the plate of cookies next to him. Once a child has fed all the cookies, take them out through the top of the box, and place them on the plate for the next child to have a turn. Play Simon Says only use a Sesame street puppet to do the saying, so it’s changed to Cookie Monster Says, or whatever character you have. (With 2’s, Simon always says, instead of the traditional game). Do an Oscar the Grouch trash collage using wrappers, pieces of newspaper and other (clean) trash items on construction paper.
