Turkey feathers, turkey feathers Brightly colored, brightly colored Who has a red one? Who has a red one? Add it now. Add it now. Make a large turkey and lots of different colored feathers (at least two for each child) Put the turkey on the felt board. Lay all the feathers in a large basket or shallow box, so the children can easily see them. Walk around the group of children. Let each child pick a turkey feather. Walk around again and let them pick another. Sing Turkey feathers with the children. Name a color and let the children who have that color add it to the turkey. Sing again, naming another color and adding those feathers to the turkey. Continue until the turkey is showing off all is feathers. Which One Is Missing? tune: Are you Sleeping? Turkey feathers, turkey feathers Red, yellow, green -- red, yellow, green (orange, blue, purple) Which one is missing? Which one is missing? Name it now Name it now. Make a turkey, two red, yellow and green feathers as well a orange, blue and purple. Put the turkey on the felt board. In random order, put two or more red, yellow and green feathers on him. Have the children cover their eyes. Take two or more feathers off the turkey. Have the children uncover their eyes and look carefully at the turkey as they sing "Which One is Missing?" After they've finished singing, have them call out which feathers they think are missing. As they do, bring that feather back and put it on the turkey. Play again and again, mixing up the colors and adding new colors. Pilgrims sailed on the Mayflower fleet The natives helped them plant food to eat The Pilgrims thanked them in a special way, After crops were harvested and stored away By sharing a feast on Thanksgiving day And this is why we cheerfully say "Happy Thanksgiving" on turkey day. Turkey Poem I have a turkey, big and fat. He spreads his wings (Fan hands at hips) And walks like that. (Struts back and forth) His daily corn he would not miss, (pretend to eat corn) And when he talks, he sounds like this-- Gobble, gobble, gobble. Thanks for homes and thanks for food Thanks for everything that's good Thanks for friends and family Thanks for blessing me. I am glad for hands that clap for fun.. I am glad for feet to jump and run... I am glad for my family who cares for me... I am glad for my friends who play with me... I am glad for the trees that stand up tall... I am glad for God's creatures great and small... Thank you god for everything! Pilgrim children did not play on that first Thanksgiving Day. The first chopped wood which he would take to help his sister cook and bake. The second took a great big sack and brought some nuts all they could crack. The third one got a turkey and she helped to roast in a pan. The fourth group corn to make some bread. The fifth made covers for the bed. The sixth one brought a pumpkin by, she cut it up to make a pie. The seventh came and popped some corn. The eighth fed horses in the barn. The ninth watched food or it might burn. The tenth churned butter in a churn. Pilgrim children did not play on that first Thanksgiving Day. Pilgrims sailed the Mayflower fleet Indians helped them plant food to eat When crops were harvested and stored away Pilgrims thanked the Indians in a special way By sharing a feast on Thanksgiving day Gobble, gobble says the turkey, soon will be Thanksgiving Day. Would you eat me? How you treat me! I will run away. The Turkey Hop Do the turkey hop Do the turkey run Do the turkey gobble It's a lot of fun Now flap your wings Like the turkeys do Then run from the farmer Before he catches you!! We do this poem in the gym. Students line up on one wall (they are the turkeys) and one student and I (we are the farmers) stand in the middle of the gym. We say the poem and do the actions. When we get to the end of the poem the "turkeys" run to the other side of the gym. If one of the farmers touches them then they turn into farmers. We play until there are only one or two turkeys left. My students really enjoy this game!! November by Valerie Welk No grass growing high No bare feet going by No birds in the sky No leaves on trees No buzzing bees November ( we put this in our poetry journals // it's nice to illustrate ) I always teach the following poem to my class. I then have them make do paint handprints around a large copy of it that I put on a bulletin baord. I am thankful for hands that hold a flower wear a lovely ring touch a kittens fur and pick up things That tie my shoes and wash my face and fold when I am saying grace.
